A defibrillator is also known as an AED. In a cardiac arrest, a defibrillator is used to try to stop the life-threatening arrhythmia that has stopped the heart.
When a defibrillator is used, the device only gives a shock if it detects that one is needed. It cannot harm anyone, and the device guides the user with voice prompts and clear illustrated instructions.
A defibrillator is needed when someone's heart has stopped suddenly. When the heart stops, a person loses consciousness within a few seconds. The most common arrhythmia that stops the heart is ventricular fibrillation. A defibrillator is then needed urgently.
A person in cardiac arrest is unconscious, is not breathing and does not respond to stimuli. Using a defibrillator does not remove the need for CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths), and for the patient's survival it is important that the resuscitation technique is correct. No training is needed to use the defibrillator itself, but basic life support training is recommended for everyone.
You can order a defibrillator for yourself or your company at the first aid courses organised by Suomen Turvallisuusopisto. The course content includes using a defibrillator in a first aid situation.
