Occupational Safety Card

Occupational Safety Card training provides basic knowledge and skills for working safely at shared workplaces. The training is suitable for all occupational groups regardless of sector – installers, subcontractors and contractors as well as people who only occasionally work at shared workplaces. The card is not required by law, but many employers and construction sites require a valid card.

Basic training lasts seven lessons, after which the exam is taken.

If your card is still valid, you can take part in refresher training, which lasts four hours. If your card has expired or you are taking the training for the first time, you must take part in the full basic training.

Occupational Safety Card is valid for five (5) years from the date of issue. The card is issued by the Centre for Occupational Safety, and it is a nationally recognised certificate of occupational safety competence.

While your card is still valid, you can take part in refresher training, which lasts four (4) hours. After passing the refresher training, you will receive a new Occupational Safety Card, which is again valid for the next five (5) years.

It is important to take the refresher training in good time before the card expires so that you can make use of the shorter training option.

Yes. Occupational safety training can be completed in three different ways:

  • as traditional classroom training
  • as a live webinar
  • as blended learning.

In webinar, i.e. remote, training, all teaching takes place online in real time, led by a trainer, and the exam is taken electronically at the end of the training day. Taking part in remote training requires a working camera, microphone and internet connection.

The exam is taken at the end of the training day, either electronically or on paper. The exam has a total of 27 questions or statements, and passing requires at least 23 correct answers (about 85%). Enough time is reserved for the exam during the training, and you may use the course material handed out by the trainer as an aid. The exam questions vary from one course to another.

You can retake the exam twice without repeating the course. The timing of the retakes is agreed with the course leader. If you do not pass the exam in two retakes, you must take the whole training again.

Renewal depends on whether your current card is still valid. If the card is valid on the day of the training, the four-lesson refresher training and the exam are enough. If the card has already expired, you must complete the full seven-lesson basic training again. Both options are available as classroom training and as a webinar.

Since the beginning of 2025, the Occupational Safety Card has only been available as a mobile card. The electronic mobile card is activated in the Korttitieto service immediately after you pass the course and serves as the official certificate of competence. You can check the card's validity in the ttkorttihaku.fi service.

If necessary, the trainer can write a temporary certificate of course completion, valid for one (1) month.

Nowadays a certificate may no longer be needed, because after the course summary the electronic mobile card is immediately visible to the participant in two different services.

Hot work course

Hot work is work that produces sparks or uses a flame or other high heat in a way that can cause a fire hazard. Hot work usually requires a hot work permit and a valid hot work qualification if the work is carried out on an insured property at a temporary hot work site. The person issuing the hot work permit also needs a Hot Work Certificate.

The hot work course lasts one working day and includes six lessons of theory, protection and initial fire extinguishing exercises, and an exam. During the course, you learn to identify hot work risks, to work safely before, during and after the work, and to understand hot work permit practices and responsibilities.

The Hot Work Certificate is valid for five years from the date of completion. The card must be renewed before it expires, either by attending the 8-hour classroom training or by completing the theory part as an online course and then attending the approx. 4.5-hour classroom session, which includes practical exercises and the exam.

The certificate can only be renewed in courses approved by SPEK. The Hot Work Certificate cannot be renewed with training organised by another body.

Hot Work Certificate training always requires at least partial attendance in person – it is not possible to complete a fully self-study online course. First-time applicants and those whose qualification has already expired attend eight hours of classroom training, which includes theory teaching, practical protection and initial fire extinguishing exercises, and the course exam.

If you still have a valid Hot Work Certificate and want to renew it, you can complete the refresher training more flexibly with a blended model: you can study the theory part independently as an online course at your own pace, and then attend a classroom session of about 4.5 hours for the practical exercises and the exam.

In short:

A valid Hot Work Certificate can be renewed in two different ways, depending on what best suits your schedule.

Option 1 – Full classroom training: You attend the normal eight-hour Hot Work Certificate training again as classroom training. The content is the same as when completing the card for the first time.

Option 2 – Combination training: You first complete the theory part independently online at your own pace, and then attend a classroom session of about 4.5 hours. On the classroom day, you practise the practical skills: protection and initial fire extinguishing exercises, and the course exam.

Combination training is only available if your current Hot Work Certificate is still valid. If the qualification has already expired, the only option is to attend the full eight-hour classroom training again.

If your Hot Work Certificate has already expired, you cannot attend the shorter refresher training; instead, you must complete the full 8-hour basic training again as classroom training. This is why it is important to renew the card in good time – preferably before the expiry date.

Yes. Suomen Turvallisuusopisto also provides hot work training directly for companies – either at the customer's own premises or at another location agreed in advance.

In company-specific training, the content is always tailored to the client's needs. When planning the training, we take into account, among other things, the sector, the special features of the working environment and the most typical accident and fire risks. This makes the training as practical as possible and directly applicable to your own workplace.

The timing is agreed flexibly so that it disrupts the company's everyday operations as little as possible.

Yes. Courses agreed with Suomen Turvallisuusopisto are not cancelled regardless of the number of participants – the course always goes ahead.

The Hot Work Certificate issued by SPEK is accepted in Norway and Denmark. In Sweden, acceptance depends on the completion date (see below).

Note on Nordic cards from the start of 2026: SPEK's hot work committee (Tulityötoimikunta) has decided that cards issued by other Nordic fire protection organisations are no longer recommended to be accepted if they were completed on or after 1 January 2026. Cards completed before that date are recommended to be accepted until the end of their validity.

Note for those working in Sweden:

Sweden has its own practice for Nordic hot work cards. A hot work card completed in another Nordic country is accepted in Sweden for the validity period shown on the card only if it was completed before 1 July 2023. Cards completed after that date are no longer automatically recognised in Sweden.

In practice, the international acceptance of the Hot Work Certificate should always be checked separately against the client's requirements or the site's insurance terms, because the requirements are ultimately set by the client or the site's insurer.

It takes about two weeks on average for the card to arrive. On request, you can get a temporary certificate for the course, valid for two (2) weeks.

You may retake the exam once without repeating the course, within one month of the course.

The training can be held in any language the trainer is fluent in, or with an interpreter. However, the language of instruction is the language stated in the course announcement.

The course material has been translated into Swedish, English, Russian, Estonian, Polish and German. The exams have been translated into Swedish, English, Russian, Estonian, Bulgarian, Spanish, Polish, Arabic, Latvian, Lithuanian, German, Ukrainian and Romanian.

The cardholder can order a new card to replace a lost one by clicking here.

A Hot Work Certificate is not always required – it depends on where the hot work is carried out.

If you work in a permanent space specifically designed for hot work, where fire safety arrangements are in order, a valid Hot Work Certificate is not required. Such places include, for example, fixed welding stations in factories and repair shops that meet fire safety requirements.

By contrast, at sites classified as temporary hot work sites – such as construction sites, roofs or other places not permanently reserved for hot work – a valid Hot Work Certificate is always mandatory.

In short:

  • Permanent, fire-safe hot work site → no Hot Work Certificate required
  • Temporary hot work site → a valid Hot Work Certificate is always required

Hot work courses can be found on our website in the training calendar. You can register directly online or contact our customer service by phone on 010 231 8382 or by e-mail at toimisto@turvallisuusopisto.fi. We organise courses both as open sessions in different parts of Finland and on request directly at the customer's premises.
