Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is Hot Work Certificate training?

Hot Work Certificate training is a hot work safety qualification approved by SPEK (the Finnish National Rescue Association) and gives sufficient basic knowledge of the risks of hot work, fire safety and the correct working methods for avoiding accidents. On passing the training you receive the Hot Work Certificate issued by SPEK, valid for five (5) years.

Who is basic education intended for?

The basic training is suitable for anyone who does not have a previous Hot Work Certificate and for those whose previous card has expired. If you already have a valid card, the shorter refresher training is enough.

How long does the training take?

Basic training takes a total of approximately 7–8 hours and is conducted over one training day. The duration includes the theoretical part, practical safety and fire fighting exercises, and finally the written exam to be taken.

Can basic education be completed online or remotely?

It can't be done. Unlike in refresher training, Basic training is always conducted entirely in-person. This is because practical exercises — especially the practice of basic firefighting with the proper extinguishing equipment — are a mandatory and indispensable part of the training.

What is taught in practice during the training?

The training includes theory on the causes and prevention of fires and a practical exercise in initial fire extinguishing with real extinguishing equipment. It also covers the responsibilities and practices of applying for a hot work permit and of fire watch duty.

How is the test taken and what if I don't pass it?

At the end of the training there is an electronic/written Hot Work Certificate exam. Passing the exam is required to receive the Hot Work Certificate. If you do not pass, you can retake the exam twice. A retake is done in the same way after a failed exam.

How soon after the training will I receive the Hot Work Certificate?

The electronic mobile card can be downloaded to the Korttitieto app practically as soon as the trainer has reported the participant details to SPEK. The physical plastic card is sent by post to the address you provided, typically within about 2–3 weeks. If you wish, you can also get a temporary certificate of the training, valid for one month from the training day.

How long is the work permit valid for?

The Hot Work Certificate is valid for five (5) years from completing the training. If the card is still valid when you renew it, you can renew it with the shorter refresher training. If the card has already expired, renewal requires the full basic training.

Is the Hot Work Certificate also valid abroad?

Yes, partly. The Hot Work Certificate issued by SPEK is accepted in Norway and Denmark. In Sweden, a Hot Work Certificate issued by SPEK is accepted until the expiry date shown on the card if the training was completed before 1 July 2023. In Finland, SPEK's hot work committee (Tulityötoimikunta) recommends accepting hot work cards issued by the Swedish, Norwegian and Danish fire protection associations for their period of validity if they were completed by 31 December 2025.

Is there training available in languages other than Finnish?

Yes, in addition to Finnish, Hot Work Certificate courses are also held in English, in Estonian  and in Russian, German, Romanian and Chinese. By registering for the training, you confirm that you understand the language in which the training is announced to be held well enough.

What if I have learning difficulties or am of immigrant background — can I still take the test?

Yes, you can. If a written test feels challenging due to, for example, learning difficulties, dyslexia, or language skills, you can discuss the matter with the trainer privately on the training day — the trainer can then take the test with you orally. The test can also be taken in another language.

Who needs a Hot Work Certificate?

A valid Hot Work Certificate is required of everyone who carries out hot work or issues hot work permits at a temporary hot work site — for example in welding, cutting, grinding or roofing and waterproofing work. The fire watch needs a valid Hot Work Certificate if the insurer's protective guideline or the client requires it. At a permanent hot work site that meets the fire safety requirements the card is not separately required, but the training is still useful for recognising risks.

Does the same card also cover hot work in roofing and waterproofing?

Yes. Since 2016, the standard Hot Work Certificate training and the hot work training for the roofing and waterproofing sector have been combined. One completed qualification entitles you to do traditional hot work as well as hot work in roofing and waterproofing.

Can basic training be ordered for the entire team at once?

Yes, training can also be organized as a group training at your own workplace, in which case the content of the training can take into account the company's sector and the specific circumstances of the workplace.

Can Hot Work Certificate training count towards driver CPC periodic training?

No — the Hot Work Certificate training is not approved as part of driver CPC periodic training, and it does not give a driver CPC entry.

What is the difference between basic training and refresher training?

The basic training (about 7–8 h) is for first-timers or those whose Hot Work Certificate has already expired, and it is held entirely as classroom training. The refresher training is only for those who already have a valid card, and it is a shorter blended course (online part + classroom day).
